NordAN Conference resolution - Alcohol no ordinary commodity
Alcohol no ordinary commodity - Long term alcohol policy and enforcement are needed.
Alcohol is no ordinary commodity and its consumption has been associated with significant harm to both individuals and society. Even small amounts of alcohol seem to be a risk factor of cancer. The numbers of newborn children damaged by the drinking of parents Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, seem to be much higher than previously estimated. Harms done by someone else’s drinking range from social nuisances through more serious consequences such as marital harm, child abuse, crime, violence and homicide.
These problems call for comprehensive approaches and long term alcohol policies such as the European Alcohol strategy 2006-2012. This has been an important push to the EU-member states to act and enforce strategies and law enforcement. The NordAN alcohol policy network urges European governments to renew the strategy and plan for a new evidence based strategy before the current strategy ends.
