NordAN Conference - Statement to the media
ALCOHOL – NO ORDINARY COMMODITY Market regulations needed to avoid social and health harm.
Alcohol is no ordinary commodity. Its consumption is strongly associated with significant harm to both individuals and society. The alcohol industry is of course interested in extending their markets and recruit new consumers, which are obviously young people and women. Research shows that alcohol marketing plays an important role in boosting alcohol consumption and related harm. Scientific data indicates clearly that effective regulations on alcohol marketing will contribute substantially to reduce harm.
International comparison rate alcohol marketing regulations in France, Faroe Islands, Norway and Iceland as the best practices in Europe. NordAN annual Assembly strongly supports the intended implementation to ban alcohol advertisement in Lithuania from January 1st 2012. Nordic Alcohol and Drug Policy Network recommend other countries to do the same.
