Norway plans changes in drug policy

Last week Health and Human Services minister Bent Høie forwarded a new proposal to the Norway´s Conservative program committee that addicts should receive health care instead of fines and imprisonment. He wants that drug users would be the responsibility of health and not of the justice sector.

“I suggest that we should provide help instead of punishment and that people who use and are in possession of drugs for personal use instead of fines and imprisonment, shall receive health care,” he said.

Health Minister stressed that he did not want to legalize drugs. It will still be illegal to buy and use hashish and heroin, but he believes the current sanctions do not work.
