Call For Discussion In Norway Around Alcohol In Skiing Culture

Four Norwegian cross country skiers, including Petter Skinstad, Kristian Græsli, Håkon Mikalsen and Rolf Jensen are unhappy with the way that alcohol was connected to the Norwegian Championships in Beitostolen last month.

The organizers in Beitostølen arranged for a closed banquet and sold 300 tickets for participants, at which athletes became extremely drunk and which in one case police had to be called to deal with an individual.

The quartet believe that by facilitating and being relaxed with heavy alcohol use, the sport is not being true to the statutes of the Norwegian Ski Federation and the Olympic Committee, which explain that they should work against the use of alcohol in athletic contexts.
