CAN: Sharp reduction in traveller imports and smuggling of alcohol in 2020 and 2021

Both traveller imports and alcohol smuggling decreased significantly in 2020 and 2021 compared to 2019. This is shown by preliminary data produced by CAN (The Swedish Council for Information on Alcohol and Other Drugs).

“We see a clear pandemic effect on travel imports and smuggling,” says Björn Trolldal at CAN in a commentary.

During the pandemic years 2021 and 2020, travel imports decreased by 64% compared to 2019 and the purchase of smuggled alcohol decreased by 39%. CAN has followed the development for many years through a questionnaire survey.

“Reductions contributed to a 4% drop in total alcohol consumption over the period,” continues Björn Trolldal.

Restaurant sales also fell during the period, but Systembolaget sales increased significantly.

“Alcohol consumption in 2021 – preliminary data”, will be available for download from the CAN website already in spring 2022, and the final data will be published in a report in September 2022.
