Finnish parliament drops lifestyle alcohol ad ban

Finnish parliament rejected on Wednesday a plea for imposing ban on using images and slogans in the advertisement of alcoholic beverages but confirmed the ban for alcohol advertising outdoors and in social media.

The bill, led by the main opposition Suomen Keskusta (centre party), was rejected by a majority of lawmakers. A total of 70 members supported the proposal, while 99 lawmakers cast votes against the bill.

NGO EHYT welcomes the decision to ban outdoor advertising and limiting alcohol advertising in social media. But they consider it to be unfortunate that a planned ban of using images and slogans that present alcohol use as a desirable lifestyle was lost in a vote. EHYT Association considers it important that this lifestyle advertising ban would´nt be completely buried, but that the preparations would continue.
