Iceland: Drunk Driving Accidents on the RiseDecember 08, 2016
The number of people injured due to drunk driving is up in Iceland this year, according to a summary from the Icelandic Transport Authority. The summary, which is based on police reports, shows a sudden increase in the number of people injured due to drunk driving this year, Fréttablaðið reports. Ever since 2008, when the injuries of 117 people were caused by drunk driving , such numbers had gradually gone down, year by year, to reach a low of 26 last year.
This year, on the other hand, by the end of August, 52 people had already been injured due to drunk driving, leading the Transport Authority to predict that by the end of the year as many as 80 may have been injured. Such a rapid increase in a matter of a year has never occurred before. There appears to be a correlation between the number of DUI accidents and an economic boom.
