Lithuania adopts substantial alcohol tax increases

Lithuanian Parliament with overwhelming majority adopted legal changes which will substantially increase alcohol tax from March 2017. All groups of alcoholic beverages will be affected – while excise tax for beer and wine will increase up to 112%, for strong alcohol it will be only 23%.

Tax increases will have to be addressed next year as well, since the planned automatic scheduling of tax increases was abandoned.

“We are very satisfied with the decision of the newly elected Parliament which demonstrated determination to reduce alcohol related harm in Lithuania. This is a real change and paves the road to a much more transparent and evidence based alcohol control policy in Lithuania. For the first time in a long time, we know that the voice of public health experts and NGO is heard. Best results are achieved when governmental agencies cooperate with NGO sector in defending public health, ” Commented Nijole Gostautaite Midttun, the president of the Lithuanian tobacco and alcohol control coalition.
