Lithuania may ban pregnant women from drinking alcohol

A legal ban on prohibiting pregnant women from drinking alcohol might be discussed in Lithuania due to recent incidents in the Baltic country related to drunk pregnant women, local media reported on Wednesday.

The Speaker of the Seimas, Viktor Pranckietis, says that a legislative framework might be adopted to protect unborn babies from mothers who abuse alcohol.

“I think that the debate that started already last week, will have results, and this should be reflected in the legislative framework,” said the head of the Seimas.

Commenting on the shocking story from last week, when a girl was born in Klaipėda with a blood alcohol concentration of more than 4 promilles, Mr Pranckietis said there was a need to start talking about the protection of the unborn child.
