Sweden: Drinking rises dramatically among older women

Older women are drinking 20 times more alcohol than did their predecessors, according to new research from Gothenburg University, Radio Sweden reports.

Researchers have been looking at how lifestyle patterns, including alcohol consumption, have changed over time, and women over 70 nearly 20 times more alcohol than women who were in that age group in the 1970s, reports Swedish Television News.

“We think it has to do with changes in gender roles – that women have become more like men, so to speak,” says Ingmar Skoog, a professor in psychiatry at Gothenburg University. He also says that it’s more accepted today for older women to drink alcohol.
